Regulation in the Automotive Industry – Thematic Research

The automotive industry is one of the most heavily regulated industries in the world. Regulation has transformed the industry. From the regulatory bodies’ early focus on safety – precipitated by Ralph Nader’s seminal work in the 1960s – there’s been a pronounced shift to looking at the environmental impact. This first theme was improving air quality by regulating exhaust and fuels; latterly the focus has shifted to limiting CO2 emissions to mitigate global heating.
