Periodic limb movements during sleep are repeated movements, mostly in lower limbs, which occur about every twenty to forty seconds. If a person has periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD), they might recognize these movements as short muscle twitches, upward flexing of feet, or jerking movements. They cluster in sequences lasting from few minutes to many hours. The exact cause of this sleep condition is still not known.
