Tanzanite, which belongs to the epidote mineral family, is a rare blue-to-violet variety of zoisite. This semi-precious stone was discovered in the late 1960s near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, and what makes this stone rare is that it is mined only in a small area of northern Tanzania.
