SnapDrop at snap-drop.net is a browser-based file-sharing service designed for quickly moving files, images, documents, links, and text between devices. It follows the familiar AirDrop idea but is intended to work across different operating systems rather than being tied to one hardware ecosystem. Because it runs in a modern web browser, there is normally no desktop application, browser extension, or account to configure before starting a transfer.

For devices on the same network, SnapDrop can discover compatible browsers and establish a peer-to-peer WebRTC connection. Its current documentation says actual file bytes are exchanged directly between browsers rather than being stored by the site’s application server. WebRTC also encrypts the transfer in transit. As with any device-discovery system, it is still sensible to confirm that the displayed recipient really is the device or person you intend to send something to.

This particular SnapDrop implementation also goes beyond simple same-Wi-Fi discovery. It supports persistent device pairing and temporary public rooms, which can help devices discover one another when they are on different networks. The service is based on the original Snapdrop concept and PairDrop work, while this public instance is independently operated and its source is available on GitHub.

A useful bookmark for people who occasionally need a fast, cross-platform transfer tool without installing dedicated software.
