CRS stands for Compulsory Registration Scheme. This scheme was introduced by Department of Electronics and Information Technology in 2012. BIS Registration (CRS) is essential for all electronic products which are notified in Mandatory Product List for BIS (CRS), such as secondary Cell & Battery, Bluetooth Speaker & Headphone, Ear-buds, CCTV Camera, Adapter for IT & Electronic devices, Printers, RFID/Smart Card Readers and similar gadgets. Both Indian and foreign manufacturers need to apply for this CRS certification to sell their products in the Indian markets. BIS Registration does not require any factory or laboratory inspection to be done by BIS Officer like for BIS/ISI Certifications. BIS Registration normally requires 20-25 working days to complete the procedure. BIS Registration is issued for 2 years initially and later on it can be renewed before expiry date for next 2 to 5 years.

The department of electronics and information technology needs the obligatory certificate for 76 electronic products out of which 63 products are added by MEITY (Ministry of Electronic and information Technology), 5 by MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy) and 8 by MHI (Division of Indian Electrical Equipment Industry - Ministry of Heavy Industries). Recently 2 more products from chemical industry have been added in the Mandatory Product List of BIS Registration (CRS). In the Company Registration Order (CRO), MEITY registered 15 categories of electronic products in the first phase. Later on, it added more electronic products in 5 phases. Other departments also added products to BIS CRS registration scheme like 5 products related to solar photovoltaic, systems, devices and components, and 8 products related to low voltage switch gear and control gear.

Who can get the BIS Registration Certificate for India? Only the manufacturing unit where the final product(s) are being produced or being assembled, can apply for BIS Registration Certificate, no matter whether manufacturing unit is located inside India or outside India. Any importer, distributor or dealer can not apply for BIS Registration Certificate. In case of foreign manufacturing unit, certificate will be issued to foreign manufacturer and Indian importer needs to get the copy of BIS Registration Certificate from the foreign manufacturer and the importer will be asked to produce that copy of BIS Registration certificate at custom point to get the custom clearance.

Copy of the original business license with manufacturing scope of the applied product category 2. Certificate of Brand (TM) Registration or acknowledgement of Applied For status 3. Test Report of the product by BIS approved lab 4. Factory related basic information 5. Details of AIR (Authorized Indian Representative), in case of foreign manufacturer

Automatic Data Processing Machine (ADPM) or Automatic Data Processing Equipment (ADPE) is any device that performs arithmetic, logical and storage functions through electronic manipulation of data. It can be of any size or capacity and can be used for any purpose. It may include any communication facility directly related to or operating in conjunction with such a device. All in one pc is an example of ADPM. Camera controller, Desktop Mini PC, Industrial PC, Projector, TV Stick, Storage are few other examples of ADPM Product List.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) released an official gazette notification on 3rd July, 2013 stating the requirement of compulsory BIS registration for Automatic Data Processing Machine (ADPM). As per this notification, any ADPM manufacturer all over the world including India, which wishes to sell or trade it in India, requires to get their product registered with the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) issued by BIS.

The BIS product certification scheme for ADPM is open to manufacturers in all countries without any discrimination. Any Indian or foreign manufacturing unit is free to apply for BIS for Automatic Data Processing Machine, if ADPM product is to be sold in India.
