Things to consider while buying a rain water storage tank
For last few years the amount of water available is reducing swiftly. India is facing acute water shortage. The country is under water stress and there is huge challenge waiting in future for us to make water available for industrial, domestic, agricultural usage. Many measures are being taken to save the water. Also, the various techniques are being invented to make the water reusable. You might have heard about water treatment plant in India, which makes the wastewater usable by treating it through many stages.
Rain water harvesting is the most popular and most reliable process invented for saving the water. As we all know, in this process the water received from the rain is collected, stored, brought into usable form and then used for various purposes. The rain water harvesting can also help in controlling floods and also to recharge the groundwater level. One can do rain water harvesting on smaller scale by storing rainwater at your building terrace or you can do it on larger scale in agricultural fields. For this purpose, you need rain water storage tank. There are many suppliers of rain water storage tank in market, but as it is big investment you have consider few things while buying it.
1. Types of rainwater harvesting tanks- Rain water storage tank can be made from concrete, metal, plastic, fibreglass or some other material. Let’s have a look at types of tanks.
1. Concrete tanks- As the name suggests, these tanks are made up of concrete and are extremely heavy. These tanks are always placed underground and are very costly. As it is placed underground, efforts are needed to be done for digging the field and place the tank at the right place. The water in concrete tank must not be used for drinking purpose as it may contain concrete particles which are hazardous to health.
2. Metal tanks- The rainwater harvesting tanks made from metals are relatively lighter in weight, hence easy to install. They are less costly, but a huge problem related to them is, with time the metal corrodes and the water gets polluted.
3. Plastic tanks- These are the most commonly used water tanks. They are made from polyethylene and are very famous. One of the suppliers of rain water storage tank was heard saying, people prefer plastic tanks as they come in high quality with cheaper rates. However, one has to be careful while buying them, as many of them can grow algae.
Apart from these three types, there is one type of tank called bladder tank which are useful if you are willing to harvest rainwater in smaller area. Then, there is the strongest tank made from fibreglass which can store more than 10000 gallons of water, but at the same time they are most expensive among the all.
1. The role of material in rain water storage tank- We must choose the material of the rain water storage tank based on the purpose for which you want to use it.
