A filling is used to deal with a small hole, or cavity, in a teeth. To restore a hollow space, a dentist removes the decayed enamel tissue after which fills the space with a filling material. Materials used for fillings consist of gold, porcelain, a composite resin (tooth-colored fillings), and an amalgam (an alloy of mercury, silver, copper, tin and on occasion zinc).
